Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Dear friends of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Survivorship Program,

This edition of "Survive and Thrive" features information about two mainstays of our approach to helping cancer survivors: treatment summaries and care plans. Our hope is that every survivor will know the details of their cancer care and have a checklist of what they need to be watchful for in order to maintain their health. If you don’t have these crucial documents, we’d love to help.

We hope to see everyone on June 18 for our annual symposium, Moving Beyond Cancer to Wellness. It’s a day full of the latest approaches to cancer survivorship and a chance to join other survivors and their loved ones in learning helpful information and sharing concerns.

Wishing you well,

K. Scott Baker, MD
Director, Survivorship Program
Karen Syrjala, PhD
Co-Director, Survivorship Program

Stress reduction workshop offered this fall

Seattle Cancer Care Alliance offers free Stress Management and Relaxation Training (SMART) for cancer survivors. Previous attendees praise the workshop: "The classes were really valuable to me right away. I started practicing the techniques immediately. I feel much more in control and happier." "We can train ourselves to become stronger emotionally. The classes were very practical and relevant and the support was incredible."

The 10-week course offers scientifically sound stress management techniques such as improving awareness of stressors, reducing stress and communicating to improve the support you get from friends and family, along with mindfulness meditation and guided imagery to help with managing worries and life changes after cancer. The two-hour weekly classes, offered both day and evening, begin in September. Please contact Katie Hanna, SCCA Resource Center, at 206-288-2081 or khanna@seattlecca.org for more information.
