As a physical education teacher, Joanie Mass challenges her elementary school students: “If you don’t take care of your body, where will you live?” Her battle with breast cancer has taught Joanie the wisdom of those words.
The 54-year-old’s long cancer journey left her emotionally and physically depleted. Her medications made her joints hurt, feeling “50 years older than I was.” Extensive scar tissue limited her mobility and caused back pain.
Joanie decided to take charge by joining Exercise and Thrive, a 12-week strength and fitness program sponsored by the YMCA and the Hutchinson Center Survivorship Program for people who have completed cancer treatment.
“I knew a lot about fitness because of my background, but this was the kick start I needed to get me going again,” Joanie said. “It was really great. I liked the camaraderie. We shared our struggles.” She received nutritional instruction, enjoyed yoga and pilates classes and was reminded of proper techniques to protect her back from injuries.
