In the 1960's and 1970's, the use of bone marrow transplantation was limited to patients who had a tissue-matched brother or sister who could serve as a donor. Because of this limitation, transplantation could be used for only 30 percent of patients who could benefit from the procedure.

In the 1980's, development of unrelated donor registries made it possible to identify donors for a larger percentage of patients. This issue of LifeLinks explains how umbilical cord blood cells and "half-matched" related donors have now made it possible to use transplantation for almost all patients who could benefit. This story should be of special interest to any of you who had difficulty finding a donor.

Paul Martin, M.D.
