Joanne C. Rubie liked her house spotless, her coffee hot and black, her wine white, crisp, and chilled, and her meat raw. The only child of Harriett Blanton and Richard Conklin, Joanne was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Los Angeles, California.
It was at USC that she met the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Rubie. They married in Dec. 19, 1949, and after he whisked her off to his hometown of Havre. She had five children, Richard (Rick), Michael, David, Kim and Jon. In 1969 the family relocated to Missoula to open the Missoula Bank of Montana. In 1976, Joanne lost her husband to a heart attack while on a couples' vacation in Mexico.
Joanne helped start Missoula Children's Theatre, was active in the arts, the symphony, and enjoyed many adventures with the "Hippie Mothers", a colorful group of ladies who hiked, rode bikes, traveled, skied, learned, and mostly laughed together. Joanne was a 60+ year member of PEO. She played bridge several times a week, served on local boards, and investment club. When her kids left home, she took up tennis, learned how to quilt and took tap dance lessons.
Joanne passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, in Spokane, Washington, with her daughter, Kim and family at her bedside. She had just been diagnosed with stage 4 Pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her sons, Michael of Missoula, David (Diane) of Bremerton, Washington, and Jon (Kim) of Phoenix, Arizona, and daughter, Kim Rubie Mayther (John) of Spokane; grandchildren, Jessica, Megan Orthemyer (T.J.), Ryan, Mykal Aageson (Roald), Todd (Jenna), Brette, Shelby, Dakota, Meredythe, Nathan, Gabrielle and great-grandchildren, Carolyn, Nora, Eleanor; daughters-in-law, Ann Rubie (Rick), Vickie Rubie; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
