I have spent many of my most memorable outdoor experiences in the mountains. Whether backpacking with my family in the Sierras as a kid, hiking and camping in the mountains of Hawai'i as a youth or exploring the many beautiful places in the Northwest. There is something special about these memories. Together with my wife Christie we have tried to share this experience with our children Raelani and Davin. Hiking Deception pass on Whidbey, adventuring in the old growth at Mt Rainier with their friends, exploring on Fox glacier in New Zealand.
Why am I doing this
Last July along with 20+ other climbers from Lydig Construction I participated in the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centers? CLIMB TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER. We came together after months of training and fundraising and stood at the trailhead. Ahead of me loomed all 12,276? of Mt. Adams. I thought, ?how came something be so beautiful and daunting?? I had expected to be challenged both mentally and physically. I thought,? It is only 3 days, I can do this to help people for whom 3 days is really a lifetime.?
My takeaways from this experience were many. I overcame doubt and fear. I felt exhilaration, gratitude and humbleness. But even more while training and fundraising and learning about breast cancer and the research the Hutch does, I connected with people for who this disease is a part of their life. There were many connections, mother, daughter, aunt, niece, friend, grandma
As I plodded up the Mazama glacier I was carrying much more than my pack. I was ferrying the names, hearts, memories, thoughts and prayers of all those people and their loved ones who supported me and the cause up that most beautiful mountain. I was fortunate to summit on a perfect day. It was amazing how fear and pain can be turned into hope and relief. I gained strength, desire and a belief we can overcome this disease. One SMALL action whether climbing or supporting a climber can make a BIG difference.
So now, I have accepted a new challenge. Mt Baker. A different peak, a different journey and with each step up we can together continue to make a difference for all those affected by this disease
